This post includes the next group to continue with tryouts.  Decisions were made based on driving range assessments, par-3 course scores, and projected team sizes.  For those who did not make the cut, please look at the junior golf handout under the DOWNLOAD FORMS section of the web site.  That packet contains information about improving your game and also opportunities for experiences in junior golf.  I hope you will continue to play and practice and consider trying out next year.

Players on this list should plan to go to Hamilton Mill Golf Club for additional 9-hole tryout rounds on Monday and Tuesday, with the first groups going around 3:00 PM.  We will be walking (you may use a push/pull carts if you have one). Remember to dress appropriately for a golf country club and also to plan for weather (cold, possible rain, wind, etc.).  If we are rained out on either Monday or Tuesday, we will have a make-up day on Wednesday.   If we are able to complete 9-holes on both Monday and Tuesday, there will be no additional tryouts on Wednesday.

Boys finish runner-up at Gwinnett Open

The 2009 Mill Creek Gwinnett Open team.  From left to right: Assistant Coach Tim Keag, Brian Kim, Shawn Yim (standing), Ben Miller (kneeling), Mitchel Konkle, Nick Stillwell, Emerson Newsome, and Head Coach Ben Hanes.

This tournament has two unique aspects: (1) each team starts six players, and the sum of the top 5 (rather than 4) scores count for the team, and (2) they use a modified Stableford scoring system to assign points to individual hole scores: 1 point for a bogey (+1), 2 points for a par (E), 4 points for a birdie (-1), 6 points for an eagle (-2), and 8 points for a double eagle (-3).

Peachtree Ridge defended their title (4 in a row?!?) by compiling 197 points, Mill Creek was 2nd with 164 points, and Norcross was 3rd with 159 points (all three are Region 7-AAAAA rivals, as is the 4th place team North Gwinnett).

For Mill Creek, junior Mitchel Konkle led the team by shooting an even par 72 and compiling +38 points, good to tie for 5th overall individually.  Senior Shawn Yim shot 75 and compiled +35 points, good to tie for 10th individually.  Junior Ben Miller shot 78, worth +33 points, freshman Emerson Newsome shot 80, worth +30 points, junior Nick Stillwell shot 81, worth +28 points, and freshman Brian Kim shot 85, worth +23 points.  Added congratulations to Emerson, who chipped in for eagle on his first hole of the day, the par-4 13th.
